Rabbi’s Message
Everything is predetermined, yet free will is granted. (Ethics 3:15)
Rosh Hashanah is a day of judgment. Regarding the countries, it is said which is destined for the sword and which for peace; which for hunger and which for abundance. (Rosh Hashanah Mussaf Prayer) This includes all events affecting nations emanating from human forces (war and peace) and all events affecting nations emanating from natural forces (hunger and abundance) These Divine decrees are based upon the guilt or merit of the countries involved.
As from the depths our hearts we silently recite: and as we hear it plaintively chanted by the Chazan, we need to know how to react to these predictions upon whose consequences depend our well-being our very lives and those of our loved ones.
First, we must pour out our hearts before our creator to grant peace and prosperity to all nations. We must pray that the forces of nature be restrained; avoiding destructive storms, wildfires, floods and earthquakes; that the hydrological cycle properly irrigate the fields into productivity and this along with a balanced climate result in blessings of abundance. We need further pray that evil, greedy leaders of nations be deposed and that they be replaced by benevolent ones dedicated to the good and welfare of the people who they lead.
We need further pray that in case sword and famine are visited upon the countries, our individual merits and the merits of - Repentance; Prayer and Charity - result in our being spared and avoiding the tragic effects of disasters.
Praiseworthy is the man who does not forget You, the human being who takes strength in You, for those who seek You will never stumble nor will those who take refuge in You ever be humiliated. (Rosh Hashanah Mussaf Prayer)
